ORGANIC TENSION

The Breaking Series Side Table from Tiwu Works, designed by Yun Zhao, is formed from the union of clean, straight planed table top that appears gently offset from its angled base creating a small “break” of wooden tendrils in its otherwise simple outline. Made of solid red oak wood with carefully finished edges and precise joinery, its black water painted surfaces emphasize the grain and quiet weight of the material. The table serves as a stable resting surface while expressing Zhao’s interest in subtle shifts of geometry, where a slight interruption in form gives visual tension and organic appeal to an otherwise restrained object.

STORY

Breaking Series Side Table

The Breaking Series by Tiwu Works explores the quiet tension created when simple geometric forms are subtly interrupted or offset by organic details. Through restrained construction and solid wood craftsmanship, the series studies how small shifts in structure can transform familiar furniture archetypes into objects of measured presence.

ABOUT THE BRAND

Tiwu Works

TIWU Works is an independent home furnishing brand founded in 2015 by Shanghai-based architect, product and furniture designer Yun Zhao, whose practice spans furniture, lighting and accessories grounded in a rigorous exploration of structure, material and cultural resonance. The studio’s work seeks to articulate traditions through contemporary design language, balancing rational structural logic with sensorial subtlety and an attentive engagement with craft and technology. Prior to establishing his own brand, Zhao amassed significant experience as a senior product designer at Neri & Hu, and his work has been recognised with international design awards for its thoughtful interrogation of form and material.
