The Office
as a Layered Interior

A successful workplace increasingly contains different degrees of formality. The boardroom, reception, individual workstation and informal lounge need not share identical furniture, but they should belong to the same material and architectural composition. Two Modi manufacturers are particularly pertinent here. Mattiazzi at Modi combines sophisticated machining with Italian woodworking, producing furniture whose construction remains deliberately legible. Marialaura Irvine's Paf Paf provides an especially interesting proposition for contemporary offices: an upholstered chair and lounge chair with a generous, softened presence that can mediate between formal workplace furniture and more relaxed hospitality-led settings. Both versions are currently represented within Modi's Mattiazzi collection. Bensen approaches the same problem through a broader vocabulary of upholstery, tables and occasional furniture. Together, the brands demonstrate an increasingly important principle: structure, comfort and informality need not be confined to separate parts of the workplace.

Meeting & Collaborative Spaces
Beyond the Boardroom

The meeting table remains one of the workplace's most architectural objects. Its dimensions organise circulation and establish hierarchy, but contemporary offices increasingly require a spectrum ranging from formal boardrooms to communal project tables and spontaneous meeting spaces. Sam Hecht and Kim Colin's Fronda for Mattiazzi is particularly relevant. Its 2000 and 2400mm tables combine pine structures with FENIX NTM surfaces, while the larger version can incorporate discreet power access. Hecht and Colin deliberately sought to avoid the overtly technical appearance that often accompanies electrified workplace furniture, retaining the visual simplicity of an ordinary table.

Fronda seating extends the same thinking. Its pine structure incorporates a shelf beneath the steel or upholstered seat specifically to accommodate possessions such as books or a laptop—an unusually thoughtful response to increasingly mobile ways of working. Alongside Tiwu Works' more monumental Bridge Table and Bensen's restrained Able system, Fronda gives Modi a compelling proposition for communal working, project tables and less formal meeting environments.

From Workstation 
to Informal Work

Seating, Repetition
& Contract Identity

Chairs acquire a different significance when repeated throughout an office. A single chair is an object; twenty chairs establish an architectural rhythm. Comfort and durability remain fundamental, but silhouette, material and spacing begin to influence the identity of the interior. Here Mattiazzi offers considerable breadth. Filo introduces graphic repetition through timber and cord, while Osso by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec provides a quieter all-timber vocabulary spanning chairs, low stools, counter and bar stools and both rectangular and compact café-scale tables. Produced in European ash or oak, Osso allows a consistent material language to move between meeting rooms, kitchen areas and informal collaborative settings without requiring identical furniture everywhere.

Fronda is more explicitly responsive to contemporary contract behaviour. Hecht and Colin conceived its integrated storage around the practical reality that people increasingly arrive at communal tables carrying laptops, books and personal belongings. When several chairs are placed together, the timber bases also establish natural spacing between occupants.

 

Specialist Metalwork and the Architectural Layer

A considered fitout extends beyond movable furniture. Shelving, storage, screens and specialist fabrication can become part of the architectural language of the workplace. Italian metal specialist Mingardo at Modi is especially relevant here. Its furniture demonstrates an unusually rigorous approach to metal as both structure and surface. Gio Tirotto's Innocent Bookcase, for example, uses black iron and black oak in single or repeated configurations, turning shelving into a measured architectural rhythm. Federica Biasi's Marianne combines a fine metal framework with tempered-glass shelves, exposing its fixings and junctions rather than disguising construction.More sculptural pieces can introduce focal points. Andrea Tognon's Roe Coffee Table uses satin-finished stainless steel around a hand-pigmented central form, giving an executive lounge or reception area the material presence of a small architectural intervention. This broadens the fitout conversation from selecting furniture towards constructing a material vocabulary for the interior.

Lighting as Workplace Infrastructure

Lighting should be developed with the furniture plan rather than after it. Work surfaces, meeting tables, circulation, vertical surfaces and informal areas require different intensities and qualities of illumination.LEDS C4 Tubs Modular at Modi is particularly relevant to larger workplace schemes. Designed by Nahtrang Studio, the system uses aluminium linear modules to create geometric suspended compositions. Certain configurations offer 360-degree optical rotation, direct or reflected illumination and DALI control, allowing the lighting to respond to both architecture and activity. A long linear arrangement can reinforce a boardroom table; larger triangular, molecular or hexagonal configurations can establish a luminous ceiling over reception or collaborative space. The fitting becomes technical infrastructure and spatial composition simultaneously. This should sit above a quieter architectural layer of downlighting, accent and circulation light rather than attempting to make every luminaire a focal point.

Task Lighting
Precision at Human Scale

At the opposite end of the lighting hierarchy is the individual desk. Richard Sapper's Halley for Stilnovo is particularly pertinent because its mechanical intelligence is integral to its form. Built around a triangular base and articulated anodised-aluminium structure, Halley's orbital construction allows what Stilnovo describes as three-dimensional positioning of the light. Modi consequently positions it specifically for contemporary desk environments. Its presence illustrates an important principle for luxury office fitouts: functional objects can possess authorship without sacrificing precision. The desk lamp does not need to become decorative sculpture, but neither must technical performance result in anonymity.

 

Reception and the
First Architectural Impression

Reception areas have a different responsibility. They communicate something about the organisation before a meeting has begun, making restraint more persuasive than an accumulation of branded decorative gestures. Here, one significant piece may be sufficient: a sculptural metal console, a distinctive seating group or a suspended lighting composition positioned against comparatively quiet architecture.

Lorenza Bozzoli's Be-lieve Console for Mingardo, for example, combines an iron structure with brass mesh and integrated cupboards, giving functional storage an unusually refined architectural presence. Tiwu Works' Waterfall Console, by contrast, uses black water-painted ash and continuous transitions between horizontal and vertical planes, reflecting Yun Zhao's interest in structural logic and contemporary reinterpretations of traditional construction. The principle is simple: identity emerges from the quality of a few decisions rather than the quantity of design objects.

A Distinctive Approach
